| Biography: | Francis, or Fanny, Burney (1752-1840) was an English novelist, later known as Madame D'Arblay. The daughter of composer Charles Burney, she was self-educated, enjoying academic discussions with family friends such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and Samuel Crisp. In 1778, Fanny published her first novel, Evelina, which was a commercial and literary success. Like the first, her later books, including Cecilia (1782), Camilla (1796) and The Wanderer (1814) explore the coming of age of young women entering society. |
