Biography: If you know it when you see it, thank Elinor Glyn (1864-1943), a British novelist who wrote women's erotic fiction for the masses and coined the term as a euphemism for sex appeal. Not surprisingly, Glyn also worked in Hollywood, where her novel Beyond the Rocks was made into a silent film starring Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino.
