Biography: E.P. Roe was born Edward Payson Roe in 1838 in New York. Roe was a Presbyterian minister, having studied at Williams College and Auburn Theological Seminary. The Chicago fire of 1871 inspired him to write the novel Barriers Burned Away (1872) and its popularity turned him from the ministry to professional writing. His novels explored the theme of how world events, especially catastrophes, can bring spiritual conversion.
