| Biography: | American writer David Graham Phillips (1867-1911) was known for his expository articles about corruption in the U.S. Senate in the early 1900s. Phillips studied at the College of New Jersey and worked as a newspaper reporter before becoming an editor at the New York World. He also wrote novels that focused on social issues, particularly the position of women in society, such as Susan Lenox: Her Fall and Rise (1917). Phillips may have paid for his outspoken writing, for he was murdered by a man who believed Phillips had written damaging stories about his prominent Philadelphia family. |
