Biography: American novelist Newton Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) is known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novels Alice Adams and The Magnificent Ambersons. Tarkington was active in literature and drama at Purdue and Princeton universities; he graduated from neither but received honorary degrees from both. A popular novelist in his time, Tarkington wrote stories featuring the regional flavor of his native Indiana.
