Biography: Bertrand William Sinclair was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1881, but came to live in North America in 1889, spending several seasons as a range rider in Montana. Sinclair's first adventure and romance novels feature the the Montana landscape, while later books tell the stories of British Columbia, following Sinclair's move to Vancouver in 1912. Always interested in his characters and their community, his last novels focus on his home town after 1922, Pender Harbour.

Unreachable except by canoe or dogsled, young Sophie Carr's cabin is tucked away in the wilds of Canada. Somehow, though, Mr. Wesley Thompson reaches Sophie's village, prepared to preach and pray the way to salvation of the native people.
