Biography: Alfred Edward Woodley (A.E.W.) Mason was a British author and politician around the turn of the 19th century. Mason's government career included membership in Parliament and service with the Manchester Regiment in World War I, where he worked in naval intelligence. Meanwhile, his first novel, A Romance of Wastdale, appeared in 1895. Mason is credited with creating one of the earliest fictional detectives, Inspector Hanaud. Author of over thirty books, he is best known for The Four Feathers, which has been adapted to film several times.
