Biography: Alexandre, Dumas, pere (1802-1870) was a French writer widely known for his adventurous historical novels including The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. His family was poor, but his father had a distinguished military career that allowed Dumas to work at the Palais Royal in Paris when he was just 20 years old. He began writing plays, then novels. His novels were extremely popular bestsellers, but Dumas enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle and was troubled by debt all his life.
