Biography: Alexksandr Sergeevich Pushkin (1799-1837) was an important figure in Romantic Russian literature, called both the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. Russian history forms the basis for many of his poetic works, such as Boris Gudunov (1831) which inspired the opera by Moussorgsky. Tchaikovsky also based operas on Pushkin works, Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades. As in his works, Pushkin met a poetic end, dying in a duel defending his wife's honor.
